These quotes and many more can be attributed to Dr. Wayne Walter Dyer, an American self-help author and motivational speaker. His first book, YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES was published in 1976, has become one of the best selling books of all time, and has sold an estimated 100 million copies.
Let’s get better acquainted with Dr. Wayne Dyer!
According to Wikipedia, our source of information, Dr. Dyer was born in Detroit, Michigan, May 10, 1940, to Melvin Lyle Dyer and Hazel Irene Vollick. Unfortunately, much of his first ten years in an orphanage on the east side of Detroit after his father walked out on the family, leaving his mother to raise three little boys. Dr. Dyer graduated from Denby High School, then served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962. He received his Ed. D. in counseling from Wayne State University. His dissertation was titled Group Counseling Leadership Training in Counselor Education.
Dr. Dyer, a Chicago native began his career there working as a high school guidance counselor, and then became a professor of counseling psychology at St. John’s University in New York City. He established a private therapy practice and as a lecturer at St. John’s University became very popular with his lectures on positive thinking and motivational speaking techniques attracting many students to his popular classes.
HOW THE BOOK CAME ABOUT
A literary agent persuaded Dr. Dyer to document his theories in his first book. YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES in 1976. Dr. Dyer quit his teaching and private practice and began a publicity tour of the United States. He doggedly pursued bookstore appearances and media interviews, selling his books “out of the back of his station wagon.” His book made best-seller lists before book publishers even noticed what was happening.
Dr. Dyer was married three times. With his first wife, Judy, he had a daughter. With his second wife, Susan Casselman, he had no children. With his third wife, Marcelene, he had five children, and two stepchildren from Marcelene’s prior marriage.
Dr. Dyer died from a heart attack on Maui, Hawaii, on August 29, 2015, at age 75. He had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2009.
