DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHOR?

Updated: Nov 2, 2019

The personal development, self- help industry is big business!

I was amazed to learn that including coaching, motivational speakers, public seminars, audiobooks and, self-improvement books this is a $10 billion dollar industry. It is reported that the sales of audiobooks are up 12% for a total of $769 million dollars per year. Self-improvement books are now in the range of $800 million business and growing about 6% per year. It is also reported that apps for smartphones are emerging for meditation, weight loss, fitness and therapist counseling. It is also reported that the 5000+ motivational speakers take in over $1 billion dollars per year with the elite 9 generating about $200 million dollars.

(From an article written by John La Rosa, president of Marketdata, LLC and the author of 100+ industry and market studies.)

Self -help or personal development can be quite a controversial subject with the question often being asked: “Do self -help books really work?” I maintain that only you can answer that question!

First, does the subject of the book resonate with you? Does the subject address the situation you have a desire to find a solution for?

Next, who is writing the book? What is the background, experience and, credentials of the author?

Given the scope of this industry and the hundreds of authors and the specialty of each one, I would like to introduce you to some that I have been impressed with over the years. They are Stephen Covey, John C. Maxwell, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Denis Waitley, and Zig Ziglar.

OUR FIRST AUTHOR IS STEPHEN COVEY.

According to Wikipedia, Stephen Richards Covey was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 24, 1932, and died July 16, 2012. He was an American author, educator, businessman and keynote speaker. He has degrees from the University of Utah, an MBA from Harvard University, and a PH.D. in Religious Education from Brigham Young University.

In 1996, Times Magazine named him as one of the 25 most influential people. He has also been awarded ten honorary doctorates. He also did a study of American self-help authors and books for his doctoral dissertation.

According to www,encyclopedia.com, “Covey chose for his dissertation the subject of the human side of success in America, as evidenced through “success literature” from 1776 forward. In his studies he found that during the nation's first 150 years, most literature focused on issues of character building --- the archetype being the autobiography of Ben Franklin.”

Also according to encyclopedia.com, “Covey’s SEVEN HABITS program, taught in his organizational behavior classes began to draw students of 600 t0 800 to 1,000. In 1985, to accommodate a larger and broader audience, he quit teaching and founded the Covey Leadership Center in Provo, Utah, putting up all his personal possessions as collateral including his cabin, his home, his trust, and all his savings. The investment proved sound for Covey and the seven other investors.”

Stephen Covey has been a very popular speaker before his foray in writing and publishing. My wife and I have enjoyed many presentations given by him and others.

Books written by Stephen Covey:

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

THE 8TH HABIT

THE LEADER IN ME

FIRST THINGS FIRST

LIVING THE 7 HABITS

Other books of a religious nature published locally by religious publishers have been:

SPIRITUAL ROOTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS

THE DIVINE CENTER

PRINCIPLE CENTERED LEADERSHIP

6 EVENTS, THE RESTORATION MODEL FOR SOLVING LIFE’S PROBLEMS

Stephen Covey married Sandra Merrill, they have nine children and fifty-two grandchildren.

In 1977 The Covey Leadership Center merged with Franklin Quest to form Franklin Covey, which became a global consulting service specializing in time management, leadership development, and productivity tools to individuals and corporations. The company mission statement reads: “We enable greatness in people and organizations everywhere.”

According to Wikipedia, his best-known book: THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE, has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1989. The audio version became the first non -fiction book in U.S. publishing history to sell more than one million copies.

Covey passed away from complications of an accident on a bicycle in July of 2012 at the age of 79. According to his daughter, Catherine Sagers, her father lost control of his bike and sustained head injuries, cracked ribs and a partially collapsed lung.

In my own personal opinion, the world lost a brilliant and good man of many talents, a great husband, father, grandfather, scholar, management, and leadership author and educator.

I heartily recommend any of his books.

FINALLY, OUR LAST AUTHOR IS ZIG ZIGLAR

I have heard Zig speak at many motivational seminars that I have attended, I have enjoyed his motivating messages. The idea and message I remember most is the message of “being willing to pay the price of success.”

This message resonated with me as a far-reaching message related to acquiring material wealth, losing weight, quitting smoking, physical fitness, and many other situations. I have often asked myself and others: “Are you willing to pay the price for success?’

Zig Ziglar was born the tenth of twelve children in Coffee County, Alabama. He was given the name of Hilary Hinton Ziglar. He was born on November 6, 1926 and died November 28, 2012.

He married Jean Ziglar in 1946 and they have four children.

Between 1943 and 1945, he participated in the Navy V-12 Navy College training program at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina and claims the University of South Carolina as his alma mater.

In 1963, with two other partners he established American Salesmasters. This was an organization of speakers and trainers. They would book an auditorium in a city and contact local business people to sell tickets. Their audiences included insurance agents, car salesmen, financial advisors, small business owners, entrepreneurs and curiosity seekers. The objectives of the organization was to raise the image of salespeople through their presentions.

He was in demand as a public speaker and author. He wrote over 30 books. It is reported that his first book, SEE YOU AT THE TOP was rejected 39 times before it was published in 1975. It is still in print today!

His favorite motto was: “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help other people get what they want.”

On November 28, 2012, he died of pneumonia at a hospital in Plano, Texas at age 86. He was laid to rest in Mckinney, Texas.

Zig was a great motivator, his books are classics! I also recommend them!
