READ, READ, READ,WHAT SHOULD I READ?
WHAT SHOULD I USE?
A PRINTED BOOK, A KINDLE, OR AN AUDIBLE?
To answer the question of what should I read? Consider the genre or category of your interest, whether it be business books, science fiction, motivation, self help, mysteries, novels, romance, fiction, adventure or how to, or something else.
The possibilities are endless, the Amazon inventory is unlimited and libraries are full of interesting books to read, and what a treasure trove of information they contain.
Several weeks ago I noticed on my local PBS channel they were presenting the Great American Read, a list of 100 great books that were being voted on as favorites of the nations reading public.I printed off a copy to keep and counted how many I had read. Out of 100 titles, I had read 32, not very many, but I was surprised even at that number! About a third! The winners were recently announced and the top ten are: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, OUTLANDER(series), HARRY POTTER,(series), PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE, LORD OF THE RINGS, GONE WITH THE WIND, CHARLOTTES WEB, LITTLE WOMEN, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, JANE EYRE. I have sold most of these to libraries and reading classes.
Of the top ten I have read six, probably most of them as assigned reading in school.
The winner was: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, a great read!
Quoting the narrative from PBS: “One of the best loved stories of all time, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, has been translated into more than forty languagues, sold more than more than forty million copies world wide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country, A gripping, heart warming, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by a virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities of a young girl, as her father – a crusading local lawyer – risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.”
A lot of teachers have assigned many students to read this book to get acquainted with Scout, Atticus and Arthur Boo Radley.
HOW TO DEVELOP A LOVE OF READING
From Common Sense Media:
A few things you can do to help your kid become a life long reader:
READ TO THEM:
As kids are growing up, make reading aloud a part of your daily routine. Kids will make positive associations with reading and spending time with family.
KEEP BOOKS IN THE HOME:
Kids who grow up in home with lots of books read more. If your family has an e reader keep it stocked with new books. You can even check out e books from the library.
SET ASIDE TIME DAILY FOR YOUR KIDS TO READ:
Prioritizing reading by making time for it,even as the kids get older, has a huge impact.
Parents who read more have kids who read more. Don’t save reading time for after your kids are in bed. Read in front of them, and make going to the library a routine for you and your kids.
Did you catch the last one? Parents who read more have kids who read more!
DEVELOP A LOVE FOR READING
In an article from WIKI HOW, “How to love reading, we read: In this day and age, many people do not read for pleasure. There are many reasons for this. Some may believe that reading takes too much time and effort, Others may never have enjoyed reading at school and can’t imagine doing it for fun. Some may simple never have have encounted an enviroment that fostered a love of reading. However, reading can greatly enhance your life experience, and there are ways to make it even more enjoyable, whether you do it freqyently or just for school or work assignments, As George R.R. Martin, author of the GAMES OF THRONES books once wrote,”A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies,…. the man who never reads lives only one.”
This article also suggests three methods on How to Love Reading:
Find the right reading material.
Develop a reading routine you love.
Help children to love reading reading.
It also suggests:
If you want to love reading reading, try listening to audiobooks first to help you get into the story or to get you by when you don’t have time to read. In addition, you should choose books and audiobooks about activities you like or issues you are passionate about so you are more likely to enjoy it.
Personally, I can’t imagine a world without books. Books have been my career, they are my passion, they are also my addiction! We have run out of room for books at our house, our shelves are full, I have also run out space on my kindle — I just can’t decide what to delete!
So, if you want to get away from it all, and either can’t afford the time or money for a vacation, just READ, READ, READ!
